The term "global village" is probably overused, but not, I think, without reason. Technological advances really have shrunk the globe, and it is certainly not uncommon to locate citizens of one nation living and doing work in another, normally literally on the other side of the world, far from the conveniences of the familiar...no Cadbury's or Earl Grey to be discovered for hundreds of miles!

Transportation is more convenient, and as the years and technologies have improved, the over-all thought of "borders" has increasingly become more a convenience compared to a difficulty to trade, or to people today physically moving around the entire world chasing commercial or other interests. Nowadays, the idea of a "global citizen" is becoming a lot more mainstream, and if the permanent trend goes on, then the total notion of the "nation" may become an obsolete construct.

Naturally, that day is likely still awhile off, but even now, one may see how such a thing might appear. We indeed are becoming a global village, and while that might make some people uncomfortable (and totally terrify just a few others), overall, my feeling of it is that this is a great thing.
