While there are no real secrets, there are a couple of useful guidelines that you can use to learn beginner guitar chords, starting today.

Lets assume that you have a chart of chords and that you have a concept of how to play the guitar, read a diagram and position your fingers on the fretboard and strings effectively. Your next step would not be to strive to master every chord that is on the chart as soon as possible.

A preferable approach would be to start out with only two to three easy to play guitar chords. These should ideally be from the same key or family. A key is a group of associated chords or a "family" that musicians use when composing songs.

Many guitar training methods will start a novice out utilizing the key of A. Three chords from this family of chords are "A" "D" and "E".

With the three chords a learner is able to play countless relatively easy guitar songs.

Use one chord at a time and master the finger placement. Starting out with the "A". Practice holding your fingers down on the chord and picking them up and reposition them again several times. Do this for as long as is comfortable for you. Don't be concerned about strumming at this point. This is called establishing "muscle memory".

Then try strumming. Strum all the strings that are supposed to be included for that chord. You may hear muted or buzzing sounds from the strings. If this is the case, continue to keep your fingers positioned on the correct strings and try playing each string one by one, paying attention to hear that a decent sound is coming from each one. Try rocking your finger back and forth on each string until finally you get a clear sound.

Now that you fully feel comfortable with your first chord = "A", try doing the exact same procedure for the subsequent one. Carry out switching between chords in a similar fashion. Position your fingers for "A" and lift and reposition the fingers for "D", and back to "A". Continue this several times. Next you can add "E" into the mix. Start out with the A, to the D to the E and continue to keep looping this pattern or progression.
