They may be based on a specific experience you had that caused you to jot down that message in your head yourself. Let's say you tried designing a bookcase once but it really didn't look very good once you finished it. Therefore, in your mind you believe you're no good at carpentry and would never try again. However you could have acknowledged that this wasn't too bad for your initial attempt and that you'd perhaps get better with experience.

Your very own attitude is the thing that will carry you to success, or defeat you before you even start.

When you don't trust you can do it - odds are extremely high that you won't. And in case you believe all the unfavorable messages from the past, you may as well construct a brick wall between you and your objectives. (And remember, you fail 100% of the opportunities you don't even go for!)
