When teeth are extracted the patient has two options in getting their dentures. The dentures may be placed into the mouth immediately on the same day the teeth were extracted; or they can wait a period of time and have the dentures placed after the gums have healed.

If you prefer same day dentures then there will be certain work done prior to the extraction. Before all of the teeth are extracted the doctor will make an impression of the mouth while there are still some teeth left. The denture will be made from this impression and will be ready to replace the natural teeth after the remaining teeth are extracted.

Same day dentures facilitate the patient to adjust to the teeth quicker because the patient will have never been without teeth. Of course, there will be an adjustment while the gums are healing beneath the new denture. During the healing process the denture should not be removed until the dentist removes them at the appointed time. If you remove them and put them back in frequently, before you have that first dental consultation after extraction, you will cause a delay in the time you will get used to the denture. The object with same day dentures is to never be without teeth.

The 2nd option is to have the teeth extracted and then go without teeth until the gums have healed. When the gums have healed the doctor will then make the impression of the gums and afterward have the teeth made. The patient can remain without teeth for about a time of three months. During this time eating is troublesome and the patient certainly does not look as attractive as he or she did with teeth, leaving the patient with a depressed mood and avoiding family and friends.

In both circumstances there is a period of adjustment. The teeth may feel a little too tight or too loose, at which time the dentist will adjust the denture to fit well. Adjustments can take a while and whenever the patient feels some pain from the denture he or she should visit the dentist without delay. When this is neglected, the rubbing denture can not just cause pain but can cause a small sore to occur. The denture should never be taken off when there is some pain from rubbing because this will only make it more difficult for one to adjust to the denture. Proper adjustment is important to ensure a proper fit of the denture.

Prior to making a decision for extraction, and before you consider if same day dentures are for you, be sure to talk it over with the dentist that will be carrying out the extraction and replacement. After you have discussed this with the dentist then make your decision. No matter what your decision is, be sure to follow it faithfully because when you do your denture will certainly not feel like a foreign material and will last for many years.
