Kids are human beings and as such should be expected to be unpredictable. Take photos of their brothers and sisters or their parents and wait for them to calm down. Don't try and intimidate or cajole them out of the fit as you are more likely to make it worse. Don't talk down to a kid or act in a condescending way simply because of their age. They are very fast to pick up on things like this and if you expect them to listen to you, you may find you are disappointed.

If the child wants to hold onto his beloved ball during the shot, then let him. Use your talents as childrens photographers to work around the child's selection of accessory rather than risk having to take nice photos of a crying child. Work as quickly as you can without compromising the quality of your services. Kids tend to have little patience and are easily sidetracked. They can't be expected to sit unmoving for hours while you work on your lighting.

Use what you have not what you hope for. The parents may want a loving family photograph but often siblings think differently. Some are more likely to punch each other than they are to stand with their arms around each other. So think about a pose that includes them in the photograph but perhaps not right next to each other.
