The Waterloo Region in southwestern Ontario is one of the fastest developing and most economically advantaged districts in Canada. People considering moving to this district will find all the important big city opportunities found in a larger community like Toronto without having the hyper fast pace, daily time spent in traffic jams and costly cost of living. For instance, while Kitchener-Waterloo real estate is currently considered one of the most advantageous purchases in Canada, Waterloo Region real estate listed prices are still considerably less expensive than in bigger cities such as Toronto, Mississauga or Ottawa.

The Regional Municipality of Waterloo is strategically located in the centre of Southern Ontario, approximately 70 miles or 100 kilometers from Toronto, 100 mi or 160 km from Buffalo, New York, and 185 miles or 300 kilometers from the U.S. border between Windsor and Detroit.

The main geographical feature of the Region is the Grand River which runs through its heart and has been a major player in its historical development.

According to the 2006 census, the Region's population was a bit more than 450,000 and it was the eleventh most populous census metropolitan area in Canada. The Region includes the cities of Kitchener, Waterloo, and Cambridge as well as surrounding towns, villages and rural areas.

Kitchener is the most populous city in Waterloo Region and the seat of the Waterloo Regional Municipality. In the 2006 census the the number of people in Kitchener was was just under 205,000. The City of Waterloo situated beside Kitchener has a population of just under 100,000. This does not include more than 20,000 seasonal post-secondary students registered at its universities and regional colleges. The two cities are located side-by-side and together are often called Kitchener-Waterloo or K-W.

The city of Cambridge is found in the southern part of the region with a population of right around 120,000. Cambridge was formed in 1973 by the merging of the cities of Galt, Preston, Hespeler and Blair. Many local people resisted this amalgamation, considering it a "shotgun marriage" forced on them by the Ontario provincial government.

In the first decade of the new millenium The Waterloo area is right up there with the most vibrant and fastest growing regions of Canada because it has some of the best agricultural land in Canada, two highly regarded Universities, a very stable financial and insurance sector, diversified industrial production and a burgeoning high tech sector anchored in enterprises like Research in Motion and numerous spinoff companies from the region's two univeristies.

People settling in the Waterloo Region will find excellent employment opportunities, an exciting and varied cultural life, and schools that are second to none. K-W real estate is also quite a bit less expensive than similar homes in other major cities such as Toronto or Ottawa.

The fact is, residents and businesses in Waterloo Region have the best of both worlds. They have the more friendly and pleasant atmosphere found in a smaller urban area along with the considerable amenities of larger cities such as Toronto, Mississauga, London and Detroit.
